Individual Counselling

I find it so hard to say no! Why do I keep doing things that I know are not good for me? I am so tired of these patterns.

Change is Possible

Individual therapy focuses on you. It provides the support you need to uncover the patterns that no longer serve your well-being and to make the changes you desire. Together with unconditional positive regard, a sensitive and attuned relationship with the therapist helps individuals to uncover the stories that are at the core of their being. Our hearts and bodies have stories that are often drowned out by the narratives of our culture, the busyness of life, and underlying unprocessed traumatic events. Anxiety, depression, and many mental health challenges are often rooted in the disconnect of mind and body, self and others, and self with self. Clients find themselves coping with this pain of disconnection through repetitive behaviors such as self-harm, staying in abusive relationships, the overuse of alcohol, drugs or sex, or other actions that do not align with their values.

In individual counselling, your therapist will work with you to begin to connect to those hidden stories somatically and emotionally so that they can emerge in a safe and contained way. These are often forgotten or repressed stories of pain and unattended needs from our early childhood or traumatic pasts. Your conscious mind may have forgotten them, but your body has not. They often emerge through unwanted behaviors. As you begin to integrate and build bridges within yourself, connection with these implicit longings will allow you to re-story your life, make choices that align with your values, and begin to walk in your innate agency. Vitality is restored and skills you never knew you had usually emerge.

Individual counselling facilitates this process through a variety of techniques including body-mind (somatic) therapy, internal family systems, solution-focused therapy, emotion-focused therapy, boundaries work, non-violent communication, and strength-based practices.
